The preliminary investigation revealed Dugas was operating a 2013 Dodge Ram 3500 eastbound on LA Highway 342. For unknown reasons, Dugas crossed the centerline then slightly over-corrected while steering to the right. Dugas' vehicle run off of the right side of the roadway, struck a ditch embankment then overturned. Dugas' vehicle came to rest in a upright position in a crawfish pond, south of the roadway. Dugas was properly restrained at the time of the crash, however suffered from fatal injuries.

Dugas was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafayette Parish Coroner's Office. Impairment was not suspected to be a factor in the crash; however routine toxicology samples were taken and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Troppers would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists that sleep deprivation can impair one's ability to drive safely. Some studies have shown that cognitive impairment caused by sleep deprivation can affect driving as much as alcohol impairment. Drivers are encouraged to be well rested before getting behind the wheel and to take breaks whenever necessary.
