DUSON, La. (KPEL) -- A 31-year-old woman was arrested and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile after she sent her daughter to school with a sock full of four golf balls.

Capt. Kip Judice with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office said the 9-year-old child was reportedly beaten up by other students at the Charles M. Burke Elementary School in Duson.

The sock of golfballs was apparently supposed to be used for the child to defend herself against the bullies, Judice said.

The child's bus driver noticed the improvised weapon. Judice said it could have caused serious harm.
