Icy Road Conditions/Closures Continue to Increase in East Texas

Wintry precipitation continues to fall across much of the eastern third of Texas. Northeast Texas to the Ark-La-Tex has been hard hit with a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain overnight and that wintry mix continues to fall this morning.

Deep East Texas has seen a mix of mainly sleet and freezing rain. The travel problems in the Pineywoods are not as widespread as they are for our neighbors to the north, but there have still been numerous accidents due to icy roadways.

There have also been more reports of sleet falling this morning leading to more icy road advisories and road closures

Icy Road Reports

• Highway 59 between Leggett and the Trinity River (Traffic to one lane on Trinty River Bridge)
• Highway 94 from the Neches River Bridge to Groveton
• Highway 287/19 from Elkhart to Crockett to Lake Livingston
• Highway 190 from Livingston to Onalaska
• Highway 84 from Rusk to Timpson
• Highway 69 from Alto northward

These are just a few of the numerous ice road reports. Lufkin Police report several accidents this morning due to dangerous 'black ice'.

San Antonio was also hard hit early this morning with several bands of freezing precipitation causing slippery roadways. That wintry mix has been moving eastward and now the Houston Metro is getting some of the freezing precipitation.

Stay Home in Possible

That's the message from the Texas Department of Transportation as well as numerous law enforcement agencies and first responders.

Thankfully, the wintry precipitation is expected to end by lunchtime. However, a Wind Chill Advisory and Hard Freeze Warning are in effect tonight across East Texas due to overnight lows in the teens and wind chill readings near 5 degrees.
