UL sophomore running back Elijah McGuire

 

Five members of Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun football team were named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association 2014 All-Louisiana college football first-team, announced on Thursday.

In addition, UL players picked up the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year Awards, and two more Cajuns were named to the second-team.

Meanwhile, eight LSU Tigers were named to the first-team, and two to the second-team.

For Louisiana, sophomore running back Elijah McGuire, senior offensive lineman Daniel Quave, and senior tight end end Larry Pettis were named to the first-team offense, while senior defensive tackles Christian Ringo and Justin Hamilton were tabbed to the first-team defense.

In addition, junior offensive tackle Mykhael Quave and senior punter were named to the second-team, while senior quarterback Terrance Broadway was named an honorable mention selection.

For LSU, junior offensive lineman Vadal Alexander, senior offensive lineman La'el Collins, and sophomore receiver Travin Dural were named to the first-team offense, while junior defensive tackle Danielle Hunter, junior linebacker Kwon Alexander, sophomore linebacker Kendall Beckwith, and sophomore defensive back Tre'Davious White picked up first-team defensive honors.

Also for LSU, junior punter Jamie Keehn received first-team accolades, while fresman running back Leonard Fournette and senior defensive back Ronald Martin were named to the second-team.

McGuire and Ringo captured the two top honors, being named Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, while Fournette, along with Louisiana Tech quarterback Cody Sokol captured awards for first-year players, while Grambling St. coach Broderick Fobbs was honored as Coach of the Year.

McGuire, who also won Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year honors, rushed for 1,165 yards, the fourth most rushing yards in a single season in school history, along with 14 touchdowns.

Ringo won Defensive Player of the Year honors after totaling 35 solo tackles, including 19.5 for a loss, which ranked seventh in the nation, and 10.5 sacks, which ranked 12th.

Fournette earned Freshman of the Year honors after rushing for 891 yards and eight scores. He rushed for 100 or more yards four times including a career-best 146 yards and a touchdown in the win over Texas A&M in the regular-season finale.

Sokol, a senior playing his first year at a Louisiana four-year school, earned state Newcomer of the Year honors after passing for 3,189 yards and 29 touchdowns for Louisiana Tech this past season.

Fobbs, who was also named SWAC Coach of the Year, improved Grambling from one win in 2013 to seven this past season.

On the 25-member first team, LSU had 8 representatives, Louisiana 5, Southeastern 4, Northwestern State 3, Louisiana Tech and ULM 2 each and Tulane 1. Southern, McNeese and Louisiana College had representatives on the second team, while Nicholls had a player listed as honorable mention.
