An escaped prisoner that we first told you about a couple weeks ago is now back behind bars.

Rayne Police say John Smith was arrested yesterday in Baton Rouge after leading police there in a car chase. Police say he was driving the city truck he stole when he escaped from the Rayne City Jail.

Baton Rouge Police say they caught up with Smith using a K-9 unit. While taking him to the hospital to be treated for a dog bite, police say Smith started banging his head against the prisoner screen, injuring himself.

Smith is currently in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He faces several different charges, including hit and run, fleeing and resisting police, and a suspended license.

Smith is being held on a $21,000 bond.

Rayne Police Chief Carroll Stelly says Smith will be transferred back to Rayne to face the escape and theft charges.
