Ex-La. Lawmaker Denied Early End To Sentence
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A federal judge has refused to cut short the court's supervision of a former Louisianalawmaker who pleaded guilty to helping an unlicensed bond broker launder money.
U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier sentenced former state Sen. Derrick Shepherd to 37 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release after he pleaded guilty in 2008 to helping Gwendolyn Moyo launder proceeds from her sale of bogus construction bonds.
Shepherd has served his prison sentence and more than half of his supervised release term. He asked Barbier to end the latter early, but the judge refused Thursday in an order that didn't give a reason.
Shepherd asked for the break because he claims he has shown he will "continue to adhere to the rules and laws of society."
