A slow moving dump truck and fuel truck traveling at freeway speed collided on Interstate 310 in Louisiana on Thursday. The driver of the dump truck was killed and the driver of the fuel truck was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

Most drivers from Acadiana know Interstate 310 as the road you take from U.S. Highway 90 to get to the New Orleans Airport or to connect with I-10. Most of that roadway near Luling was closed for a majority of the day on Thursday. As of early last evening, a small section of the highway was still closed.

Investigators are still trying to piece together why the dump truck, driven by Chalanta Brown was traveling so slowly on the high-speed roadway.  The impact between the dump truck and fuel tanker was so forceful it actually turned the dump truck on its side. It also ignited the almost 8-thousand gallons of fuel the tanker was hauling at the time.

Drivers who have travel plans to the New Orleans area or to the airport are encouraged to check 511LA.org for the latest road closures and conditions in the area.
