The state has seen a sharp rise in the numbers of fatal boating accidents. So far this year, Louisiana has recorded 30 fatalities compared with 21 for all of 2010. Adam Einck, with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, says a lower death toll for last year may be an unintended consequence of the BP oil spill. He says with so many of the Gulf waterways closed many boaters stayed home last year. Einck says accidents can be avoided by following rules similar to the ones we follow when driving on the roads.
