Vikings Come Back From Early Deficit To Hold On Against Lafayette High

The Mighty Lions jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, but wouldn't score again as Northside scored 14 unanswered points to take the 14-10 win.

Running Back Dionte Duperon, who won game MVP honors for Lafayette High, got his team on the scoreboard first with a touchdown that put the Mighty Lions up 7-0. After Northside's offense went 3-and-out, their defense forces LHS into a punt, which was fumbled by NHS, setting up the Mighty Lions' veer offense inside the Vikings 10 yard line. But the Vikings defense held, forcing a field goal, giving LHS a 10-0 lead with 2:17 left in the 1st half.

But that's when Northside QB Ethan Rose, who won game MVP honors for the Vikings, showed the fans what he could do. He started off Northside's ensuing drive by completing a 20 yard pass, then kept the ball on a fake handoff and ran 60 yards for a touchdown. Then, even after two penalties on the 2-point conversion attempt, the Vikings still found a way to get it in the end zone on a pass completion from Rose. But, at the half, Lafayette High still led 10-8.

In the 2nd half, after the two teams traded possessions, the Vikings used a mix of runs and passes, with Rose leading the shotgun offense, to put up another TD on a Rose pass. In the final minute, Lafayette made it very interesting as they drove deep into Northside territory with only seconds remaining, but were turned away by the Northside defense as the Vikings held on for the 14-10 win.

Northside opens their regular season schedule on the road against the Acadiana Wreckin' Rams, while Lafayette High travels to take on Kaplan.

Carencro Shuts Out St. Martinville

In a game where two defenses really battled it out, the Golden Bears used special teams and a little trickeration to pull the shutout over the Tigers, 17-0

After SMSH failed to score on their opening drive, they were forced to punt to CHS. Carencro's two returners then bobbled the punt, but once one of them recovered the ball, it was off to the races and into the end zone as the Golden Bears found themselves with an early 7-0 lead. Despite CHS driving into SMSH territory again, though, they failed to score any more points before halftime, but still led 7-0.

Carencro then took the 2nd half kickoff and converted a field goal, giving them a 10-0 lead. Running back Colin St. Julien (Sr.) displayed his speed, quickness and elusiveness on the drive. First, he had a run that was reminiscent of the great Barry Sanders, breaking numerous tackles on his way to gaining a few yards. Then, St. Julien broke a huge run and even caught a pass out of the backfield to eventually set up the field goal for the Golden Bears.

Carencro then converted on a fake punt (their second fake punt conversion of the game), which led to a St. Julien TD, giving Carencro a 17-0 lead that ended up being the final score.

St. Julien won MVP honors, while SMSH Sr. QB Quinton Mitchell took home MVP honors for the Tigers.

Carencro opens their season on the road at Westgate, while St. Martinville will play host to Jennings in their Week One matchup.

Notre Dame Pulls Away From Cecilia In Win

A young Cecilia team showed they could hang with Notre Dame, but in the end, it was the Pioneers that ended up with the 21-12 victory.

On their first drive, Cecilia was forced to punt, but after a Notre Dame fumble on the return, found themselves with the ball in ND territory. That's when a wide open Raymond Calais Jr. (Soph.) was able to catch a short pass out of the backfield and turn it into a long touchdown for the early 6-0 Bulldog lead (PAT failed).

But ND responded with a drive mixed with runs and passes, ending in a John Michael Besse (Jr.) TD run to give the Pioneers a 7-6 lead.

The game then went back-and-forth as Cecilia struck back with a Calais 70-yard TD run as Cecilia went up 12-7 (PAT failed). But Notre Dame went on another steady drive, filled with runs and passes, that ended in a QB Brad Stoma TD run, making the score 14-12 Notre Dame at the half.

In the 2nd half, the Pioneers then took the kickoff and finished with a TD, run in by RB Lance Bertrand (Soph.), giving them a 21-12 lead that held up as the final score.

Stoma won MVP honors for Notre Dame, while Calais took home MVP honors for Cecilia.

Cecilia opens their season at home against Comeaux High, while Notre Dame will host LaGrange.
