Firefighters were called out to battle the blaze in the 100 block of N. Loop at around 6:45 this morning. The man who lives there, Donald Bates, was able to get out of the home safely along with his three granddaughters and a great granddaughter.

All the family's belongings were lost in the fire.

It took firefighters about a half an hour to bring the blaze under control, and the Acadiana Chapter of the American Red Cross is helping the family.

Lafayette Fire Department Spokesman Alton Trahan says they are still investigating how the fire got started.
