An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury has returned a 16-count indictment against a former Baton Rouge police officer accused of stealing cash seized in drug investigations.

Attorney General Buddy Caldwell says 28-year-old Michael Thompson of Denham Springs was charged Wednesday with 16-counts of theft for allegedly stealing about $27,000 that was seized during narcotics investigations.

Thompson is accused of stealing about $15,000 that was seized during narcotics investigations. Sgt. Donald Stone, a Baton Rouge Police spokesman, has said that Thompson admitted he was addicted to prescription pain medication and took the money to fund his addiction.

Thompson, a five-year veteran of the police force, resigned after his arrest in April.
