Former state education Superintendent Louis Michot Jr. has died.

Delhomme's Funeral Homes has taken charge of arrangements and said that Michot died Monday in Lafayette at the age of 89.  A funeral Mass will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Broussard.

Michot had a long record of service in Acadiana, being elected a state representative in 1959 and then serving as a member of the Louisiana State Board of Education in 1968.  He was then selected to lead the Louisiana Department of Education in 1971.

Michot was also a World War II veteran, having served as an anti-aircraft battery gunner officer on the USS Enterprise as a member of the Marines for four years.

Michot was also known locally as one of the organizers of Bank of Lafayette.

He is survived by eight children, including former state Sen. Michael Michot.
