Fort Hood Gunman To Be Own Attorney At Sentencing

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — The soldier convicted of killing 13 people in 2009 at Fort Hood says he will continue to represent himself during sentencing.

A military jury found Maj. Nidal Hasan guilty of murder on Friday. The trial now moves into the sentencing phase, which begins Monday. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Hasan.

Prosecutors say they will call at least 19 witnesses during sentencing. It is not clear if Hasan will call any witnesses.

During the trial, Hasan gave a brief opening statement but called no witnesses in his defense and did not give a closing argument.

The military judge, Col. Tara Osborn, told Hasan Friday that she thought it was unwise for him to be his own attorney. But Hasan said he still wanted to do it.
