Imagine you are only 18-years-old and you are navigating B-24 bombers in war-torn Europe.  Well that was the reality years ago for Lafayette's Hewitt Gomez who was busy getting supplies to troops that were part of the resistance.

Gomez was honored yesterday by the French Consul General Jean-Claude Brunet as he presented Gomez with the French Legion of Honor.

Brunet says it is the highest decoration order in France, and the award was presented to Gomez for all of his work in helping to free France from the Nazis.

Brunet thanked Gomez for risking his life on behalf of France when they held the ceremony at Le Centre International in downtown Lafayette Thursday.
