This morning in New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg's ban on large sugar-laden drinks was approved by the Department of Health in a 9-1 vote.

How long do the Big Apple's Big Gulp enthusiasts have until they can't buy a soda bigger than 16 ounces?

The ban is set to take effect on March 12, 2013, 180 days after today's vote, and it will make sure that restaurants, fast-food chains and movie theaters sell their customers sugar-sweetened drinks in cups that are 16 ounces or smaller.

As it turns out, Big Gulp enthusiasts will still be able to get their jumbo-size drinks, as convenience stores and grocery stores are expected to be exempt from the ban.

Despite the mayor's resolve, recent studies and polls have shown that a majority of New Yorkers are against Bloomberg's idea, suggesting that he's furthering his "nanny state" agenda. These protests have even included some notable celebrities.

What do you think? Is Bloomberg going too far with his idea? Or will his decision help in the fight against obesity?
