As the winter weather continues to make its impact throughout Acadiana, whether it's causing icy roads to get shut down or canceling Mardi Gras Day Parades, La. Governor Bobby Jindal's office is releasing these five safety tips to help keep you safe:

  • Drive slowly, carefully, and avoid driving while distracted
  • Allow for extra driving time
  • Reduce speeds when visibility is low
  • Make sure there is plenty of room between vehicles
  • Look out for black ice---a thin, transparent layer of ice accumulation that can be visually hard to detect on bridges, overpasses, off-ramps and in shady spots

Jindal says all efforts will be made to keep major corridors open throughout these conditions, however, "we expect these near-freezing temperatures and icy conditions to last through Wednesday," says Gov. Jindal. "We urge individuals in affected areas to remain off the roadways if possible and to use caution until conditions improve.”

Jindal encourages drivers to utilize the new "Way to Geaux" app to get real-time, around the clock travel alerts.
