Yesterday, Governor Jindal signed a new law that will combine the pardon and parole boards. HB 518 by Representative Joesph Lopinto effectively merges the two boards to save money by eleminating duplicative positions.

Now, the Department of Corrections will continue it's normal duties of trying to reintegrating non-violent offenders into society. Governor Jindal spoke about the saw,

Both the Pardon and Parole Boards perform essentially the same duties – granting clemency to offenders – and there is no need to have two boards performing the same services when a single entity can execute those duties at a cost savings to taxpayers.”

This new law also coincides with the other sentencing reforms that were passed earlier in the year.
