BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana says Gov. Bobby Jindal andLouisiana State University should slow down their efforts to shrink the state's public hospital system.

Friday, the group called for a multi-year transition to ensure time for private hospitals to take up the slack and for LSU to find new places to train physicians, The Advocate reports. (http://bit.ly/Reao1Y )

LSU is sprinting to make changes, citing Jindal-directed cuts required to balance the state's budget. The plan calls cuts $150 million at seven south Louisiana hospitals, including those in Baton Rouge, Lafayette and New Orleans.

LSU board member Bobby Yarborough, also a council member, says PAR has "no clue" about what LSU really faces.

Jindal Chief of Staff Paul Rainwater says the state has "no option but to move now."
