UPDATE: Trahan reported the Explosive Ordinance Detonation Unit from Fort Polk has retrieved the grenade.

The explosive unit along with Lafayette Hazmat and State Police will bring the device in a remote area of the parish to render it safe.

Trahan said residents in the Judice area should not be alarmed if they hear a loud noise at approximately 1:30 p.m. this afternoon. The teams will detonate the grenade in a controlled procedure.

HazMat teams are on the scene at Lamar Properties in Lafayette investigating the discovery of a hand grenade.

Lafayette Fire Department spokesman Alton Trahan reported Lafayette Hazmat, Lafayette Police Department and State Police Hazmat have cordoned off an area near the intersection of Cadillac and Buick Streets.

Trahan said the area will remain secured until a team specializing in handling explosives arrives from Fort Polk.

The grenade was discovered while staff at Lamar Properties were sorting through storage boxes that originated at a New Orleans home that the company purchased.
