The St. Landry Parish Council held a special meeting last week to vote for a resolution to show their intention to develop the Harry Guilbeau I-49 Economic Development District.

The special meeting was called by St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot, and council members voted unanimously for the economic development district.

The council also decided to go further than a resolution, as they also all voted in favor of an ordinance to create the district.

The St. Landry Parish Economic Development Group will partner up with the parish and the City of Opelousas to make the project a reality.

The goal is to do the following:

Create jobs
Preserve jobs
Provide other employment opportunities
Improve the economy

In other council business, they amended an order to introduce 2015 St. Landry Parish Budget.
