A heater accidentally left on in a Lafayette home today caused heavy damage to it.

Lafayette firefighters say the home on 1003 South Orange Street belonged to Melvin and Candice Batiste, who were not home when the fire started. The fire started in the living room by an electrical short in an extension cord, which was connected to the space heater.

No injuries were reported.
