ANGOLA, La. (AP) — West Feliciana Parish Sheriff J. Austin Daniel is recovering from severe injuries he sustained Sunday when he was tossed from his horse, which then fell on him, at the annual Angola Prison Rodeo.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Erin Foster tells The Advocate the 65-year-old Daniel, who suffered three broken ribs, a punctured lung and broken collarbone, is expected to make a full recovery.

Foster said the sheriff was on his horse outside the rodeo arena when the horse got spooked, tossing Daniel to the ground before falling on him.

She says first responders on site immediately transported Daniel to the hospital.
