With gas prices soaring, the Republican-controlled House has approved a new energy bill. The measure aims to open more areas to domestic oil exploration, especially in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Virginia.  The measure faces an uncertain fate in the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats.  Meantime, Democrats are pushing hard to end roughly four-billion dollars in annual taxpayer subsidies to hugely profitable oil and gas companies.  President Obama wants to divert that money to alternative energy pursuits.
