On Saturday, April 12, Lafayette Consolidated Government's Environmental Quality Division is sponsoring a household chemical drop-off day.  Only residents living in the city of Lafayette or unincorporated Lafayette Parish will be allowed to drop off chemicals. The event will be from 8 a.m. until noon at the Cajun Field parking lot off of W. Congress St., according to Consolidated Government's Environmental Quality Manager, Mark Pope.

Attendees should enter Cajun Field through Gate 4 off of W. Congress St.

Residents can safely and properly dispose of household chemicals such as paint and paint products, pesticides, insecticides, chemical cleaners, and mercury.

Electronics such as computers, cell phones, and copiers will not be accepted, according to Pope, because Lafayette now has two businesses which will accept electronics for recycling.

Other items that are not accepted include tires, motor oil, and batteries.

Residents should place any leaking containers into a larger container for safety and health reasons.  Chemicals that can be identified, but whose labels have fallen off, should have an identifying label placed on the container.

Pope says as much of the collected material as possible will be recycled. Eight hundred to 1,200 cars typically attend. Residents should expect to wait about 30 minutes before their chemicals are unloaded at the site.

Those attending to drop off chemicals will be required to stay in their vehicles while employees unload their cars or trucks.

Drivers' licenses will be checked to confirm that those attending reside in the city of Lafayette or unincorporated areas of Lafayette Parish, which constitutes Lafayette Consolidated Government's jurisdiction, Pope explained.

A complete listing of items to be accepted is available HERE, or information flyers are available at Lafayette City-Parish Hall or the Lafayette Public Library, or call 291-8529 for more information.
