The Iberia Parish School Board asking the state to pick up the bill.

Superintendent Dale Henderson says the unfunded mandates, costs the state imposes on local governments, are putting his school system in a hard spot.

A resolution being sent to the Legislature states the school board's belief that imposing these mandates is unconstitutional, and they're calling on other school systems to sign on to the resolution.

Some of these mandates include stipends for teachers with national accredidation, LEAP remediation courses, busing for private schools, and the teacher retirement fund. Henderson says the retirement fund made up the majority of the school system's $3.7-million deficit last year.
