PLAQUEMINE, La. (AP) — Several members of the Iberville Parish Council have expressed displeasure over Parish President J. Mitchell Ourso's recent decision to scale back garbage collection for parish residents.

Trash pickup occurs twice a week.

The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/NP1zw8) Ourso informed the council he has decided to reduce that schedule to once-a-week pickup for trash, effective Aug. 1.

Ourso says he based his decision on the Solid Waste Fund's looming deficit.

He says the parish spends $265,000 a month for trash collection, but collects only $210,000 to $220,000 monthly in sales tax revenue.

Councilman Salaris Butler told Ourso Tuesday he would like to see the council involved in the decision-making process to help determine if there is an alternative.
