A Lake Charles mother is behind bars after her four children were injured when she crashed her vehicle in a drunk driving accident.

Louisiana State Troopers reported 29-year-old Kate Elizabeth Davis crashed her van around 12:30 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 165 near La. 101.

Once Davis drove off of the road , the vehicle hit a ditch and burst into flames.

A good Samaritan stopped at the scene of the crash and was burned himself as he rescued the children from the burning vehicle.

State Police reported her four children were riding in the vehicle as unrestrained passengers at the time of the crash.

An 8-year-old was transported to Our Lady of Lourdes for moderate injuries and burns while her other children--ages 1, 2 and 5—were taken to Lake Charles for medical treatment.

Davis was charged and booked into the Jeff Davis Parish Correctional Center on the following charges:

  • Driving While Intoxicated
  • DWI with Child Endangerment,
  • Resisting Arrest By Fighting
  • Resisting Arrest By False Representation
  • Improper Lane Usage
  • No Child Restraint (3 counts)

The Louisiana Department of Child and Family services is responding to the incident.
