JENNINGS, La. (AP) — The City Council has approved a plan to redraw its district lines to meet shifts in the city's population.

The American Press reports ( the plan retains five districts, including two minority districts.

The redistricting was based on the 2010 federal census, which showed the city's population as 10,383.

Registrar of Voters Lorraine Dees, who helped draw up the proposal, said the districts were redrawn because populations changed in the existing districts. Both existing minority districts showed reduced populations, she said.

City officials hope to hold a public hearing on the redistricting proposal in the next two weeks.
