The Jennings City Council will consider a proposal in June that would increase the salary for future mayors of the city.

"This is not a raise for (current Mayor) Terry (Duhon); it is a possible increase for the next mayor," City Attorney Kevin Millican told the council on Tuesday.

Right now, the mayoral salary is set at $52,000, but the proposal would increase that salary to $65,000.

Councilman Johnny Armentor says the current salary is well below those of mayors of other cities along the I-10 corridor. The mayor of Rayne makes $73,083 a year; the mayor of Crowley makes $65,370; and the mayor of Abbeville makes $60,304, according to the latest audits posted on the Louisiana Legislative Auditor's website.

"I'm not saying other municipalities won't increase theirs further," Armentor says, "but this will put us in the range we need to be."
