Low-income families are one step closer to getting some financial help for their children.

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has approved the use of public money to pay for private school vouchers. Superintendent of Education John White and Governor Jindal want to expand a pilot program that's already in effect in New Orleans.

That program offers private or parochial tuition assistance to low-income families. Under the governor's plan, low-income families with a child attending a public school rated C or below would be eligible for the program.

Lawmakers will vote on it in the upcoming legislative session.
