It was less than two weeks after Jonathan Lucroy was traded from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Texas Rangers that the rains came to southern Louisiana.  So many in Acadiana had flood waters in their homes.

One home that was flooded early in the 48 hours of rain was that of Ragin' Cajuns assistant coach Anthony Babineaux, his wife Joni and their two daughters.

Friends set up a gofundme account for the family.  They, like so many, had no flood insurance.  Their friends and colleagues have contributed and while response has been great, much more help is needed.

Several former players have made contributions.  And, Lucroy is one of them.  But Jonathan and Sarah have gone a step farther.

The Lucroy's didn't hesitate to tell Bab and Joni to move into their place while repairs continue on the Babineaux home.

Their lack of hesitation surprises no one, at least those who know the Lucroys.

It's now been, believe it or not, 13 years since Jonathan Lucroy first set foot on the campus of the University of Louisiana.

Fans of the Ragin' Cajuns watched him grow while he was a player and were thrilled when he was selected in the third round of the 2007 MLB draft.  And, we learned his values, instilled in him by his parents, Steve and Karen, fit in just right with the Cajuns of south Louisiana.

The love affair between Acadiana and Lucroy has been mutual.  He and his wife Sarah, along with their daughter, make their off season home in Lafayette.  In the fall, you'll frequently find him at Cajun Field rooting on his alma mater.  Throughout those 13 years, Lucroy never forgot the fact the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns gave him a place to play when no other Division I schools stepped up.

He's helped out his alma mater with the remodeling of coaches' offices and the renovation of M. L. "Tigue" Moore Field.  Giving back has always been something important to Lucroy, who was nominated by the Brewers for the Roberto Clemente Award, in part for his work in honoring those who have served in the military.

I'm sure there are many across the country that will hear about or read this story and be surprised something like this would happen.

We aren't.

We know Lucroy.
