U.S. District Court Judge Dee Drell said the board failed to demonstrate how the construction of a gym at the school, which is the most racially identifiable high school in the district, would further desegregate it.

The charter school student makeup is 80 percent white and 20 percent minority.

In response, The Town Talk reports Avoyelles Parish District Attorney Charles A. Riddle III filed a motion on behalf of the district asking Drell to reconsider.

Officials say the school doesn't have a gymnasium or a venue large enough to hold student activities.
