Junked Vehicle Law Headed To Courtroom

After a lengthy delay, a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Lafayette's embattled junked vehicle ordinance is finally moving forward in court.

On Dec. 8, an attorney for the city is scheduled to take a deposition from Marcus Bruno, who once headed up the city's now defunct Criminal Justice Support Services division, which oversaw enforcement of the ordinance.

The city ceased enforcing the ordinance after George Phillips Jr. filed a lawsuit in 2007 in response to the seizure of four of his vehicles, all of which were parked at rental property owned by Phillips.

Dee Stanley, chief administrative officer for Lafayette Consolidated Government, said enforcement of the ordinance remains on hold, pending the outcome of the civil suit.
