Jury Beginning Deliberations In Trial Of Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal

In the federal civil rights trial of Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal, testimony wrapped up Friday morning.

Prosecutors argued that Ackal knew prison inmates were being abused on his watch, though the attorney representing the sheriff said the state’s witnesses are known liars. One of the former deputies in the trial testified that Ackal told them they could beat up whomever they wanted.

The jury is set to begin deliberation this afternoon.
