A Kaplan man is facing vehicular homicide charges following a weekend crash. Troopers say 23-year-old Kade Abshire was driving a 1999 Chevrolet truck north on LA Highway 35 early Sunday morning when he drove off the road. The truck flipped over, ejecting Abshire. His passenger, Pete Johnson, also from Kaplan, wasn't wearing a seatbelt and died from his injuries. He was pronounced dead by the Vermilion Parish Coroner.

During the course of the investigation, troopers were able to figure out Abshire had a blood alcohol level of point-1-6-0. That's twice the legal limit. This crash remains under investigation.

State troopers say during their investigation they found that Abshire entered a left curve and traveled off the right side of the road which caused his vehicle to overturn.  Abshire was not restrained and was ejected from the vehicle.

Abshire was also arrested for DWI 1st offense, careless operation and no seatbelt.
