La. Course Options Show Big Enrollment Gains

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — State education officials say participation in a state program that offers students more course choices shot up eight times after getting a $7.5 million boost from the Legislature last year.

The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/1wvUbbi ) the expansion, which was pushed by Gov. Bobby Jindal, is an offshoot of Louisiana's Course Choice, which is aimed at giving students in grades seven through 12 access to classes that are not easily available.

The state Department of Education said Wednesday students have enrolled in 19,068 of the courses for the current school year, up from 2,362 in the previous school year

More than 13,000 of the sign-ups are dual-enrollment — courses taken by public school students that also earn college credit.

College algebra, English composition and Western civilization are the most popular courses.
