La. Senate Rejects Medicaid Expansion Proposal
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Voters won't be asked to decide whether to expand Louisiana's Medicaid program to give government-funded health care to more adults.
The Louisiana Senate voted 22-15 Monday against Sen. Ben Nevers' proposal to add the item to the fall ballot. A similar proposal already had been defeated by the Senate health committee.
Nevers, a Democrat from Bogalusa, sought to bypass Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal's opposition to the Medicaid expansion by bringing the question directly to voters. But senators refused to add the idea to another health care proposal up for debate.
The expansion would offer Medicaid coverage to adults making up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level — less than $33,000 for a family of four. Most of the cost would be paid by the federal government.
