La. Town “Mayor-Less” For 2nd Time In 4 Months

GREENSBURG, La. (AP) — For the second time in about four months, Greensburg is without a mayor.

Mayor-elect Willie Hurst resigned Tuesday. Hurst, a former alderman, was elected in March to serve a four-year term as mayor beginning Dec. 1. Gov. John Bel Edwards later appointed him to the post on an interim basis after the June 2 resignation of Burke Jones.

Hurst told The Advocate his resignation has nothing to do with an earlier disagreement with the town's police chief over the handling of a domestic abuse case. He says he's leaving "purely for personal reasons, just to kind of move on with my life."

Town attorney Clifton Speed says three open seats will need to be filled during the March 2017 special elections: the mayor's and two Board of Aldermen seats.
