Lafayette Sheriff's Deputy Greg Lavergne (48) collapsed and died yesterday at Carencro High School while volunteering with the wrestling team.

The Daily Advertiser reports that around 4:00pm on February 6th, coaches began performing CPR on Lavergne, including using a defibrillator that had been installed in the gym, but were not able to resuscitate Lavergne.  Eventually, paramedics arrived on the scene and made efforts to revive him, but were also unsuccessful.

Lavergne had been a member of the Lafayette Sheriff's Office for years and had volunteered with the school for around ten years.

Officials are not yet releasing the cause of death for Lavergne.

He leaves behind Lorie, his wife, and their four children.  One of their daughters is a student at Carencro High School.

School officials note that the staff had participated in a yearly training session with Acadian Ambulance just a month earlier.
