The ongoing dispute between the city of Lafayette and the city of Broussard is reaching new heights.

The city of Lafayette has announced that starting April 30, the city of Lafayette will no longer provide dispatch services for city of Broussard fire departments. The decision comes as the result of a lawsuit pending between the cities over an annexation dispute.

City-Parish President Joey Durel discussed the decision to discontinue the dispatch service for the city of Broussard today during his weekly “Lafayette Live” segment on “Mornings with Ken and Bernie”.

The discontinuation of dispatch services will likely have far reaching impacts on both the city of Broussard and its citizens. Dispatch services are critical to the insurance ratings for a city. Durel predicts insurance rates in the city of Broussard will likely double for businesses and citizens as a result of the service discontinuation.

Durel explained factors that went into the decision,

It’s unfortunate, we did not want to do it, but we can’t maintain a relationship with a government that’s hostile with the city of Lafayette government. We’ve begged, asked, and pleaded with the government of Broussard to make the decision of whether the lawsuit was more important than the services we provide. It’s been clear their decision is that they’d rather sue the city of Lafayette than have the services we provide.

The dispute between the two cities emerged after the city of Lafayette attempted to annex Les Vieux Chene Golf Course property, a city of Lafayette project built an the unincorporated area of Lafayette Parish.
