Lafayette's Fire Chief Robert Benoit testified yesterday at the trial of 44-year-old Daniel Harmon who has pleaded not guilty in the death of 19-year-old Christine Wood.

The chief says the apartment were Wood died in 1989 had been set on fire, and he says the smoke alarm had been ripped out of the apartment.

Benoit was a fire investigator back in 1989 when he found Wood's body wrapped up in towels in her bedroom, and she was clutching a pillow.

Prosecutors say Wood had been shot in the head three time, and they say DNA evidence shows Harmon had sex with her.

Defense attorney Alfred Boustany argued that officials have not yet proven that it was Harmon's DNA, or that his client killed Wood.

Harmon was convicted of rape and aggravated kidnapping in 1994 in Tennessee.
