A Crestlawn Drive home was severely damaged Friday after a fire started in the carport.

According to Lafayette Fire Department investigator Alton Trahan, the owner of the home called for help at about 8:30 p.m. after he noticed that his carport was on fire.

When firefighters arrived, Trahan said "heavy flames" were coming from the roof of the carport, and a vehicle underneath the carport had also caught fire.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to put out the fire, Trahan said.

There were people inside the home when the fire started, but no one was injured.
