Lafayette Inmate Dies At UMC

A Lafayette Parish Inmate being held on charges out of Florida died yesterday after being taken to University Medical Center.

Lafayette Sheriff's deputies arrested Hewell Monday, September 24 for an outstanding Broward County Florida warrant.

He was awaiting extradition proceedings to that he could be returned to Florida to face the charges against him..

Around 10:40 yesterday morning,  Hewell complained to Lafayette Parish Correctional Center Staff members that he had chest pains.

Hewell was sent to University Medical Center at 11 a.m.  Hewel was pronounced dead at 3:08 PM Thursday.

Lafayette Parish Sheriff's officials say that Scott Hewel was 53-years-old.  He had a local address in Scott.

The Lafayette Parish Coroner is conducting an investigation in conjunction with the Sheriff’s Crimes against Persons Unit to determine the exact cause of death.
