A Lafayette man accused of beating his live-in girlfriend to death has now been indicted on a charge of second-degree murder.

24-year-old Adam Batiste III was indicted Wednesday by a Lafayette Parish grand jury for the death of 18-year-old Gabrielle Spencer who died in January.

Police reports show that Batiste claimed to detectives that Spencer fell while in the bathtub, hitting her head. He told investigators he then spent 30 minutes trying to revive the woman.

Spencer was taken to the hospital, but she died the next day, on January 17th.

Doctors told police that they found Spencer with severe bruising, broken bones and a head injury that likely caused her death.

He is still sitting in jail on a $250,000 bond.
