The Lafayette Police Department officers that were involved in a fatal shooting of a wanted man have been cleared by a grand jury.

Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Simon, in a grand jury report, says the grand jury heard the case by her office in Thomas Helvik's death.

Simon says the grand jury decided there was not "evidence of a criminal act by the Lafayette Police Officers who responded".

According to police, Helvik was their main suspect in at least five robberies last year that happened between Alexandria and Broussard.

Lafayette Police shot and killed Helvik after a car chase through south Lafayette in September of last year.
