A Lafayette Parish grand jury has indicted a mother and her boyfriend after the death of 3-year-old Julian Madera last year.

21-year-old Landon Broussard was indicted for first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend's child, while the mother, 22-year-old Laura Smith has been indicted for second-degree cruelty to juveniles.

The coroner's report stated that Julian died after being subjected to blunt force trauma all over his body, and he ruled the child's death a homicide.

Assistant District Attorney William Babin says he has not yet made up his mind as to whether or not the death penalty will be sought in this case.

Both Broussard and Smith are incarcerated in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.  He is being held without bail, while Smith has had her bond set at $500,000.
