Lafayette Parish Deputy Sheriff Jailed In Conspiracy

Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Deputy Calvin Powell was arrested today on a number of charges related to a conspiracy to injure a witness. The witness is currently jailed in the Parish Correctional Center and it's alleged that Powell was involved in a conspiracy to transfer the witness to a housing unit occupied by several inmates who wanted to harm the witness. Powell is charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice, conspiracy to commit intimidating, impeding or injuring witnesses and malfeasance in office. Powell was employed by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office since March of this year. He has been placed on administrative leave without pay.
