A longtime employee of the Lafayette Parish Public School System was appointed by the school board to lead the system on an interim basis.

The Lafayette Parish School Board 6-3 to appoint Burnell LeJeune as the interim superintendent.

LeJuene had served for years as the director of Schools of Choice and career and technical education. He's also served in various positions in the system over the course of 38 years, including teacher, principal, assistant principal, and other supervisory roles in the central office.

At a special meeting Monday night, the school board voted unanimously after his appointment to offer their full support to LeJeune.

The contract of former superintendent Dr. Pat Cooper was terminated on a 7-2 vote last week after he was found guilty on a number of charges during the course of a two-day disciplinary hearing. Cooper has vowed to appeal the board's decision.
