The Lafayette Police Department confirms to Newstalk 96-five KPEL that the American Bank on Moss Street has been robbed.

The Lafayette Parish School System says several schools are on lockdown due to the incident.  Here is the statement:

Due to a bank robbery at American Bank and Trust Company on Moss Street, schools in the vicinity have been placed on lockdown, Acadian Middle, Evangeline Elementary, JW Faulk,  and Northside.  This lockdown is to ensure the safety of our students.  LPSS is working cooperatively with the Lafayette Police Department and will lift the lockdown once an all clear is given.

Corporal Paul Mouton tells KPEL that a white male about 5'5" to 5'7" walked into the bank and demanded money.  A shot was fired, but no one was injured.  The man was wearing a white t-shirt and jeans.  He fled by carjacking one of the employees' cars, but later abandoned the vehicle.
