Lafayette Regional Airport commissioners are urging voters parishwide to approve a one-cent sales tax to fund improvements to the terminal at the airport.

Commissioner Paul Segura said the proposed tax has a definite start date and end date, and revenue generated from the tax would be used exclusively for construction of a new terminal and any related infrastructure.

"We made sure that the bond attorneys were very specific in what these monies could be used for and what they could not be used for," Segura said.

To be included in the airport project, should the sales tax receive voter approval, are five new boarding gates, more convenient checkin, better TSA security screening, better and larger baggage claim area, increased parking, and easier dropoff access, among other thing.

Collection of the tax would run from April 1, 2015 to Nov. 30, 2015.
